The Process
The process of wrapping a car is pretty straightforward. Your vinyl wrap expert will work with you to understand your vision and lay out some options for you. When everything is agreed upon you will drop the vehicle off and you won’t be able to use it for at least a few days. The car will be disassembled so that the vinyl wrap can adhere to the back of every panel making sure that it won’t peel up. If vinyl is applied without disassembling the vehicle there is a strong chance that the shop you brought it to doesn’t know what they are doing. You should always be wary of any fly by night wrappers who give you a turnaround time of under 48 hours for a full car wrap.
Before wrapping, the car is prepped by using a clay bar to remove any dirt or wax that is currently on the paint. Having a clean surface ensures that the vinyl will stick effectively and not lose it’s grip over time. Like most things, proper prep is key for a good wrap, and anyone working in a dirty environment is risking a lot of hard work just to be lazy.
During the application process, vinyl is generally applied one panel at a time. Heat is used to make the vinyl temporarily more pliable and ensures that it adheres to curved surfaces without issue. How Long Does A Car Wrap Last?
This is one of our favorite questions, as it’s so subjective to you and your use of the car. Some cars sit in a temperature controlled environment for most of their lives, only going out for an hour or two on the weekend in nice weather. Those wraps last a lot longer than your daily driver that’s parked in the driveway subject to the elements.
As a general rule of thumb, a proper wrap should last around 5 years, but this can vary tremendously. After the first two years the vinyl will start to fade if it’s out in the sun often. You will begin to see chips and tears on the front bumper. It’s a great thing to see, because at least you know you protected the paint from those marks and scratches. If any individual area is severely affected, you can simply have that panel rewrapped. That’s the real beauty of vinyl!
